I produced this double exposure inside Adobe Photoshop by using two stock images (links below) of a night sky and a kid swinging.
While I was creating this piece, it had no explicit meaning, apart from looking good. However, now I’ve finished it and look back on it. I’ve developed a certain amount of mystery about the piece.
For me, the kid swinging into the stars represents youthful aspirations that we’ve all experienced. Always dreaming of the next big thing we want to do with our lives.
Also, the tree within the kid; signifies hope, determination, and resilience. Always looking to improve on what we have, the tree never gives in and always preserves on.

This piece was relatively simple to make; consisting mainly of layer masks and adjustment layers.
The original image was cut out using the RGB channels to create a channel of high contrast. This channel was then selected and inverted. Following this, I placed the selection inside of a layer mask on the background.
This process created the necessary double exposure look. After this, it was a matter of adding adjustment layers, composing the image, and adding back in the ‘ghostly’ layer of the original image via a de-saturation and multiply blending mode on a lowered opacity.
Finally, the background was created by selecting one of the lighter colours in the image and using it to fill the background layer. The night sky image is then added on top of this layer with a high Gaussian blur and a low opacity.
