People are hung up on belief being productive is a result of being part of the 3 am club. Let me tell you, why they’re wrong.
In the past, I firmly believed in the mentality of early waking; until I noticed what it was doing to me. I became unmotivated, lethargic and unpleasant to myself and others.
Guess what the best part of waking up early was? I wasn’t any more productive than when I woke up at my regular time.
What was the point then? It enlightened me to the reality which led me to my current method of ensuring productivity, and it’s working!
Later in this article, I will be sharing my new method, but first, we need to understand what was wrong with the old method.
In Theory, It Was Great.
The idea of waking up two or three hours early is as solid as concrete.
Get up before everyone else, have two or three hours of uninterpreted work where you can build your dreams. Work in peace before the world erupts around you.
The moment I read this strategy of ensuring productivity, I was sold. I loved everything about it. But, there was a distinct problem that I soon found with this method…
In Practise, It’s Awful (or, at least for me).
I get up at 5:30 am every day to get to work for 9:00 am. Meaning if I want to get those two or three hours before I need to be up. I have to wake up at about 2:30 am every day.
Combine this with the 8 hours of sleep that adults should be getting per night, and I need to go to bed at 5:30 pm every night. Considering, I don’t get home from work until 6 pm; this just isn’t possible.
Initially, I thought, I could function with a sleep deficit of 2 or 3 hours every night. But, I couldn’t have been any further from the truth.
My mistake was, I started to rate productivity over sleep. This mistake produced all the negative impacts I mentioned. I ate crap, was lazy, put on weight and, felt like crap.
Something had to change.
To begin with, I evaluated my daily schedule. Following this, I edited my schedule to ensure I incorporated a series of things every day:
- 7/8 hours sleep every night
- Time for exercise
- Time for reading
- Time for personal work
After I knew what I wanted to have in my schedule, I had to get real with myself and listen to what my body was saying.
Listen, Learn, and Lead
I knew from how I felt every day that waking up early was the problem. My body hated it. Even with the 7/8 hours of sleep, I didn’t function properly, and I never achieved the levels productivity I wanted as a result of it.
Time to shake things up. So, I began implementing the Listen, Learn and Lead mentality.
I listened to my body, what it was telling me and, the signs it was sending me.
By listening to my body and observing the physical signs, it gave me. I learned what the problem was. It was waking up early.
I then lead my body and life in a new direction. Finding the time I was most productive, within the time I had available and working then. I then planned my other activities around the remaining time.
Throughout this process, I learnt that it’s not about doing what others are doing but instead finding out what works for you and capitalising on that.
We’re all different, and we all work different, no-one is the same. You might be the opposite of me and prefer working at 4 am, and that’s fine, or you might prefer working at 11 pm and that is fine too.
The point is, you need to find the time that works for you and work then. Your productivity will thank you for it.
Since I implemented this mentality into my life and I scheduled my time (article coming soon) I’ve achieved so much more. I go to the gym four times a week, I run over eleven miles a week, I write on Quora for three hours a week, and I write at least one Medium article per week. All of this alongside my 9–5 job and commuting.
